Journalist, newspaper editor, Presbyterian minister, and abolitionist, Elijah P. Lovejoy left his mark on Alton and American history in both life and in death. For nearly 188 years, since Lovejoy’s murder at the hands of an angry mob, his gravesite and memory have been entrusted to a group of individuals dedicated to ensuring his legacy remains relevant today. This presentation will discuss the life of Elijah P. Lovejoy, the trustees of his grave, the story of the Lovejoy Monument, and the fascinating history and evolution of the group now known as the Elijah P. Lovejoy Memorial Board.
