Vintage Voices is an annual program that brings Alton's past to life with historical reenactors telling the stories of Alton's passed citizens. One of the eight performances of the tour, Caleb Kelehan tells the story of Lieutenant Cary WaplesLieutenant Cary Waples, a man whose life was tragically cut short at the age of 23 in a military aviation accident during World War I. Yet his story connects to a fascinating chapter of Alton history - the vast network of war horses. More than 250,000 horses were brought to the Bowman and Job Farms in East Alton from mid and western United States and shipped out of the East Alton Stockyards to Europe during World
War I. Waples is interred in the Grand View Mausoleum.
