Verda Jones

Verda Ann Jones, nee Claussen, departed this life June 4, 2026, at age 91 in Carbondale, with her brother at her side.

She was the beloved daughter of R. Lynn and Harriett (Wulf) Claussen. She grew up in Bethalto and was Valedictorian of her CMHS class. She spent much of her adult life in the West and Northwest, returning to Bethalto late in life. She had been a legal secretary. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church and a volunteer for the Bethalto Public Library and Operation Christmas Child.

Her daughters, Jessica Ann and Alison Gwynne, preceded her in death, as did her husband Alan and brother Thomas. She is survived by her brother Neil Claussen, sister-in-law Dorothy Claussen, and her nieces and nephews--Juli, Bill, Kathryn, Michael and Christine.

Verda was a strong, independent person, and a loyal friend. She was a wonderful cook, and she and Alison hosted many fabulous dinners. She was a voracious reader and loved games; especially cards, trivia, or scrabble, and just like her mother, she played to win. Although she had endured more tragedy than most, she carried on with admirable positivity and fortitude, never losing faith.

Visitation will be held on Monday, June 15, 2026, from 10:30 am until time of service at 11:30 am, at First Baptist Church of Bethalto. Pastor Josh Crisp will officiate.

Memorials are suggested to Bethalto Public Library.
