Sylvia K. Winfield, of Granite City, Illinois passed away peacefully at her home at 2:04 a.m. on Monday, September 22, 2025.
She lived 102 years of life with many wonderful and cherished memories with family and friends. Born August 25, 1923, in Marion, South Dakota, a daughter of the late Lon L. and Mary E. (Way) Hood.
She married the love of her life, Millard O. Winfield, on January 14, 1944, in St. Louis, Missouri and he passed away on October 2, 2000.
Following graduation from High School, she attended and graduated from a business college in Sioux Falls, Iowa. She held several secretarial jobs throughout the years prior to raising her family. Sylvia was a faithful member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church where she had served as a Eucharistic Minister. She enjoyed her years of activities with the Red Hat Society and enjoyed her days of cooking and sewing. Her family and her church were always top priorities in her life and she cherished her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by four children, Judy (Robert) White of Maryville, Brian (Jeanette) Winfield of Granite City, Mary Beth (Brad) Boone of Granite City and Nancy Hauptman of Glen Burnie, Maryland; a daughter-in-law, Cheryl Winfield of Granite City; fifteen grandchildren, Jennifer, Mark, Greg, Scott, Tim, Amanda, Amy, Brett, Becky, Bradley, Alan, Jessica, Michael, Mecalla and Mady; twenty four great grandchildren; two brothers, Wallace and Patrick Hood of Minnesota; many nieces and nephews; other extended family and friends.
In addition to her beloved husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Douglas Winfield and Bruce O. Winfield; a grandson, Corey; three sisters, Kay Kincer, Roberta Fischer and Mary Helen Seis and three brothers, Lon Hood Jr., James Hood and Frederick Hood.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 28, 2025. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 29, 2025, at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 2300 Pontoon Road in Granite City with Father Alfred Tumwesigye as the celebrant. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon.
