Susan Gail Aerne, age 66, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, surrounded by the love of those who held her dear. Born on April 28, 1959, in East St. Louis, Illinois, she was the cherished daughter of the late Sant Elmo Gifford and Lottie (White) Gifford.
Susan lived a life defined by kindness, warmth, and an unwavering devotion to others. She dedicated many years of service to Cigna Insurance Company, where her diligence and quiet dependability earned the respect of colleagues and friends alike. Beyond her work, Susan found joy in life’s simple pleasures, spending peaceful afternoons by her pool, losing herself in a good book, and, most of all, gathering with those she loved.
To know Susan was to feel welcomed. She had a rare gift for making others feel seen and valued, never meeting a stranger and never hesitating to offer a helping hand. Her generosity of spirit and genuine compassion left a lasting impression on everyone, fortunate enough to cross her path. Above all, her family and friends were her greatest pride and deepest joy.
She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Shane Aerne; her siblings, Lisa Gifford, Thomas Gifford, and Roberta Hicks; and her brother-in-law, David Bagi.
Susan’s memory will be treasured by her loving sister, Laura Bagi; her dear godmother, Beverly Carter; her cherished godson, Eric Carney; her devoted best friend, Sondra Koleff, all of Granite City; her proud nephews, Tyler McClain and Brian Bagi; as well as her extended family and many dear friends whose lives she touched so profoundly.
A graveside service to honor and celebrate Susan’s life will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville, Illinois. Family and friends are invited to gather directly at the cemetery.
Susan’s legacy is one of love freely given, friendships deeply held, and a life lived with quiet grace. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always.
