Ruby Corbus

Ruby L. Corbus, age 90 of Greenville, passed away Friday afternoon, December 19, 2025, at Greenville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Greenville.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 27, 2025, at the Donnell – Wiegand Funeral Home in Greenville. Interment will follow in Mt. Auburn Cemetery. Visitation will be on Saturday from 12:00 noon until service time. Memorials may be made to Greenville First Christian Church or Greenville Free Methodist Church.

Ruby Lottie Smith, the daughter of Winnifred and Ida May (Owens) Smith, was born March 7, 1935, in Fort Assiniboine, Alberta, Canada. She was married to Glen A. Corbus on August 21, 1965, at Central Christian Church in Greenville. They enjoyed 56 years of marriage together before Glen’s death on November 4, 2021.

Ruby took many secretarial classes at and graduated from Victoria Composite High School in Edmonton, Alberta. She then attended Moose Jaw Bible College in Saskatchewan for two years. During the time she was working at a lawyer’s office in Moose Jaw, a help wanted ad in the Free Methodist Church headquarters magazine caught her eye. She applied for the job in Winona Lake, Indiana, and was hired in 1958. While there, a friend suggested that since there were no eligible men to marry, she should go to Greenville College. In 1961, Ruby made the move to Greenville, where in the ensuing years a friend who worked at Corbus Home Supply introduced her to Glen. She worked in various campus offices on her path to earning a degree in Elementary Education in 1966. After graduation, she continued to work with the National Defense Student Loan program and as a switchboard operator on campus until her daughter was born in 1967.

Ruby worked for 25 years as a secretary and then another five years as a bookkeeper at the First Baptist Church. She also typed thousands of pages for Greenville College students and professors. Ruby, known for her artistic and craft talents, painted numerous VBS backdrops and created costumes for church programs. She loved to sing, especially the old hymns, and shared her gift in church choirs and for many years at the Monday night service at the nursing home.

Ruby loved and cherished her children and grandchildren. She loved playing games, making crafts, and even searching for bugs and worms with them and encouraged their creativity. She was a Den Mother when her boys were in Cub Scouts, and she enjoyed hosting her kids’ friends.

Surviving are her three children: Glenda (Timothy) Roman of Nineveh, Indiana; Mark (Susan) Corbus of Greenville, and Timothy Corbus of Greenville. Loving grandmother of five: Sarah Corbus, James (Abbigale) Corbus, Tyler (Bri) Roman, Benjamin Roman, and Nicholas Roman, as well as great-grandson Emerson Roman and a Corbus grandson due in the spring.

Ruby was the last of her generation, preceded in death by her siblings: Verna, Orpha, Mary, Donald, and twin-sister Ruth.
