Robert Compton

Robert “Bob” Compton, 64, passed away on Friday, June 12th, 2026. He was born December 20, 1961 in Alton, to Francis & Beulah (Clanney) Compton.

He was a “jack of many trades” over the years, with decades in home construction and Hazmat in refineries across the country. He was a proud Veteran and honored he served his country with the U.S. Army. He enlisted in June of 1979 and went to Fort Jackson, SC to begin his training. In October of 1979 he graduated with his diploma of Power Generation and Wheel Vehicle Mechanics. His dedication and skill was evident from numerous letters of commendation from superiors. In November of 1979, he deployed and completed the USAREUR Host-Nation Headstart Orientation Program at Daley Barracks in Germany, where he completed the remainder of his service.

He was avidly outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and gardening. He was a master of every skill, generous and hardworking, having spent the majority of his days helping neighbors and friends with work they needed done. In his world, he never met a stranger, just a friend he hadn’t met yet. He was a proud and devoted father and PawPaw, completely intertwined in the daily lives of his daughter and grandchildren.

Bob is survived by his only child, Samantha Compton of Alton; his grandchildren, Brooklynn Marie Robertson and Evan James Robertson of Alton; two bonus grandchildren, for whom he felt blessed to share for many years, Ava Rose Richie and Evan Robert Richie of Jerseyville; his siblings, Linda Morgan of Grafton and Anthony “Tony” Compton of Grafton; nieces Carrie, Jamie, Tracie, Michelle and Brandy. Bob is preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Daniel, Cynthia and Brian; a brother-in-law James “Jim” Morgan; and his niece Emalee Compton.

Our deepest gratitude is extended to all of the wonderful staff of OSF Healthcare and Moeller Cancer Center, Dr. Timothy Lyons, as well as, Andrea and many others at Jerseyville Walmart Pharmacy, for Bob spoke so highly of your support and kindness.

A memorial service with military honors will be held on Friday June 19th, 2026 at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, Illinois. Visitation hours will be between 4pm-6pm and Honors ceremony will commence at 6pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to The Fallen Outdoors, whose mission is to connect Veterans in therapeutic outdoor excursions and adventures.
