Richard Brownstein

Dr. Richard Brownstein, 73, of Edwardsville, Illinois, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, service, and boundless love.

Born in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, to the late Raymond Galileo Brownstein and Mary Elizabeth (Llewellyn) Brownstein, Richard’s life was defined by an unshakable commitment to healing, humanity, and heartfelt connection. A devoted and deeply respected Gastroenterologist, Dr. Brownstein served patients across the nation for over four decades. His heart was especially drawn to the Mississippi Delta, where he cared for underserved communities with remarkable grace, humility, and empathy. To Richard, medicine was never just a career, it was a calling.

Beyond the hospital walls, Richard was a man of many passions. A gifted photographer, he captured beauty through a lens with the same sensitivity he brought to his work and relationships. He also loved to fly his plane and drive race cars. He possessed a contagious laugh, an open heart, and a warm smile that could instantly light up a room. He believed in the goodness of people and lived with a generosity of spirit that knew no bounds. Whether it was offering a helping hand to a stranger or showering his grandchildren with affection, Richard led with kindness.

Above all, Richard was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a doting grandfather. His love for his family was fierce and unwavering, and his happiest moments were those spent in their company—sharing stories, laughter, and unconditional love.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Diane McGowan Brownstein of Edwardsville, IL; his cherished children, Erin Butti, Ryan (Jessica) Brownstein, Kaelan (Lakin) Brownstein, and Nathan Brownstein; and his treasured stepchildren, Amanda (James) Petroski and Jeremy (Rachel) Yeager. Richard also leaves behind his dear siblings, Larry Brownstein, Marilyn (Gary) Smith, and David (Karen) Brownstein; seven adored grandchildren, Tranter Butti, Shayden Butti, Tucker Brownstein, Lennon Petroski, Annie Petroski, Bran Petroski, and Dorian Yeager; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and countless friends whose lives he touched.

In honor of his giving spirit, memorial contributions may be made to Tunnels to Towers, Wounded Warriors, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

A celebration of Dr. Richard Brownstein’s extraordinary life will be held at a later date.
