Phyllis V. Wiggins Mitchell, 93, of Glen Carbon and formerly of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 9:54 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at her home.
She was born July 26, 1932, in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of the late Fred and Christina (Knachstedt) Pfeiffer.
Phyllis married Robert L. “Bob” Wiggins on September 16, 1950, and he passed away on October 2, 1985. She later married Charles A. “Chuck” Mitchell on January 1, 1996, and he passed away on May 9, 2008.
She retired in 1996 from the Granite City School District after 32 years of dedicated service as an elementary school teacher. She also enjoyed several years as a house manager at The Fabulous Fox Theatre in St. Louis, Missouri. She was also a longtime active and faithful member of Nameoki United Methodist Church in Granite City. She was active with many organizations throughout the years and was proud to be an Honorary Life Member of the Illinois Congress of Parents and Teachers, the Illinois Retired Teachers Association, life member of the Illinois PTA, Silver Foxes and member of the SIU Alumni. She enjoyed her many travels in life, reading and cherished special times shared with her family and many dear friends.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert E. and Shirley Wiggins of Collinsville; a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Steve Giebe of Collinsville; six grandchildren, Traci Andrews, Larry C. Horstmeyer, Kristin Bettorf and husband, Mike, Ryan Wiggins and wife, Kaity, Tara Giebe and Nick Wiggins and fiancé, Paeton Wantuch; seven great grandchildren, Brooke, Jayden, Tayler, Hadley, Sinjin, Sunny and River; other extended family and friends.
In addition to her parents and both cherished husbands, she was preceded in death by a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Larry Horstmeyer and a brother, Gordon Pfeiffer.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be at the Nameoki United Methodist Church, 1900 Pontoon Road in Granite City on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. until time of a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Mattheis Larimor and Pastor Tim Pate officiating.
Burial will follow at St. John Cemetery on Nameoki Road in Granite City.
