Paul J. Wellinghoff, 84, Alton, IL, died Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at his home.

He was born March 18, 1940, in Bartelso, IL to Bernard and Frances (Kohrmann) Wellinghoff, who both preceded him in death. He married Martha “Marty” Fehrmann, daughter of the late August and Irene (Hilmes) Fehrmann, on August 7, 1971. Marty passed in 2012. Also preceding him in death were his siblings Bernard “Pete” Wellinghoff of Breese, IL, Joan Foppe (Ed) of Breese, IL, and Sister Catherine Wellinghoff of Johnston City, IL; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Paul Fehrmann, Irene “Sis” (Andy) Huelsmann, Betsy (Joe) Hempen, Cletus “Buck” Fehrmann, Auggie Fehrmann, Frances “Hap” Peters, Rita (Ken) Dressel, and Tom Holtgrave.

Paul is survived by his children: David (Sandy) Wellinghoff of Acton, MA, Andy (Eileen) Wellinghoff of Oxford, MS, Charles Wellinghoff of Alton, IL, and Jimmy Wellinghoff of Alton, IL, his grandchildren: Andrew John “AJ” and Ella Wellinghoff, Greta and August “Gus” Wellinghoff, and Samantha Anderson; sisters Marie Davis of Breese, IL, Grace (Paul) Goedde of Breese, IL, Margie (Paul) Schniers of Breese IL; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Dottie Wellinghoff of Breese, IL, Tony (Cheryl) Fehrmann of Breese, IL, Cleo (Jack) Wilken of Bartelso, IL, Thom Fehrmann of Urbana, IL, Theda (Severin Wellinghoff) Fehrmann of Newburgh, IN, Willene Fehrmann of Highland, IL, Pat Fehrmann of Breese, IL, Grace Fehrmann of Breese, IL, and Frank Peters of Carlyle, IL

Paul served his country in the United States Air Force Reserve after high school and worked as a United Steelworker for nearly 40 years. When not volunteering his time and effort at Saint Matthew’s Catholic Church in Alton, IL, Paul enjoyed spending time with his wife Marty and boys, which included hours of poker, building craftsman furniture for his friends in his woodworking shop, and discussing current events. His intellect remained razor sharp until his passing. Paul was a kind, decent man who will be missed dearly by his family, friends, and entire community.

Cremation rites were accorded. A memorial mass for Paul will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 23, 2024 at Saint Cecilia Catholic Church in Bartelso, IL.
