Nora Obenhaus
Granite City | Save
Nora Renee Obenhaus, age 61, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 1, 2026, at her home, surrounded by the love of her family. Nora was born on May 4, 1964, in Granite City, Illinois, a beloved daughter of the late Jack Pence and Thelma (Lane) Mathis.
On April 21, 2001, Nora was united in marriage to the love of her life, John Obenhaus Jr., in Dupo, Illinois. Together they built a life rooted in love, devotion, and family.
Nora will be remembered above all as a loving wife, devoted mother, cherished grandmother “Nana NayNay,” sister, aunt, and dear friend. Her strength was quiet yet unshakable, matched only by her deep compassion for others. She had an extraordinary heart for service and often spoke of her dream to one day open a soup kitchen to feed those in need—a dream that reflected her generous and selfless spirit.
For many years, Nora dedicated herself professionally as a medical assistant, caring for others with the same kindness and empathy she showed in her personal life. She gave freely of herself, never asking for recognition, and touched countless lives simply by being who she was. Nora will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents, Nora was preceded in death by her siblings, Dennis Mathis, David Mathis, and Kristie Mathis.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her devoted husband, John Obenhaus Jr.; her loving children, Keith (Heather) Perigo, Steven Perigo, and Nicole Perigo, all of Granite City, Illinois; and her treasured grandchildren, Rylee, Ethan, Anderson, and Landon, who brought immeasurable joy to her life. She is also survived by her dear brothers, Kevin (Neola) Mathis of Dover, Tennessee, and Mark Mathis of Granite City, Illinois, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and a wide circle of friends who were blessed to know her.
In celebration of her life, memorial visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at Irwin Chapel in Granite City, Illinois, with a memorial service to follow at 1:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Dennis Mintner.
Memorial donations may be made to Unity Hospice Foundation (https://www.unityhospice.com/donate/) in honor of Nora’s giving heart. Donations will also be accepted at the funeral chapel.
