Maurietta L. Gibbons passed away on Sunday, April 29, 2012 at 10:35 pm at her residence. 

 

She was born on July 5, 1915 in Jersey County, IL, the daughter of David and Margaret “Maggie” (Baum) Collins. 

She married James H. “Herb” Gibbons on March 4, 1936 in Wood River at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on December 26, 1989.

Maurietta was employed with Olin Corp. during World War II. She was also formerly employed at International Shoe, Gouldings Jewelry in Alton and Paul’s Fabrics in Alton.

She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Patricia “Trish” Gibbons of Alton, Mary and David Eckhouse of Alton; one son and daughter-in-law, D.W. “Bill” and Carolyn Gibbons of Alton; she also helped raise her grandson, David W. Gibbons Jr.; fourteen grandchildren; twenty eight great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; one sister, Margaret E. “Sissy” Gress of Alton; two sisters-in-law, Barbara  and Virginia; and her nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son James in 1990; two sisters, Helen Kallal and Wilma Heitzig and three brothers, Edward Collins, David “Doc” Collins and Emmett E. “PeeWee” Collins of Jerseyville.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 pm Tuesday on May 1, 2012 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 am on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at St. Frances Xavier Catholic Church with Father Rev. Fr. D. Patrick Gibbons as celebrant.

Burial will take place at St. Frances Xavier Cemetery in Jerseyville. 

Memorials are suggested to Masses or to the Leukemia Foundation.
