A lifelong reader, philosopher, and friend, Mary Ann Barnard, 95, died peacefully July 15, 2024. She was forever upbeat, interested, and optimistic.
Mary Ann was born in Alton on June 15, 1929, the only child of Emily (McPhillips) and Stan Meister. Always kind and empathetic, she chose to do the right thing all her life. She graduated from Monticello College in1949, and the University of Illinois in 1951.
In 1955, she married Bill Barnard and they embarked on a long and happy partnership.
In the 60s they were transferred to New York, living in Connecticut and making great friends there. Coming back to Alton meant coming back to lifelong friends and family.
Mary Ann and Bill were gracious hosts who enjoyed welcoming and entertaining guests in their home, especially during holidays.
Mary Ann was always willing to listen and help. She especially appreciated her affiliation with the Hayner Library Jennie Ds, the Monticello College Foundation, and OASIS Women’s Resources.
Mary Ann is survived by three children and their spouses; Ann and Paul Toftness of Saint Paul, MN, Jamey and Susan (Wild) Barnard of Onekama, MI, and Alice Barnard and David Schmalbeck of Alton; five grandchildren, Eric and Kate Toftness in Roseville, MN, Corson Barnard in Chicago, Louise Barnard in Los Angeles, Will Schmalbeck in Chicago, and Andy Schmalbeck in Alton; and two great-grandchildren, Charlie and Nora Toftness. She is also survived by a half-brother, Stan Meister and his wife Judy, of Chicago. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Bill Barnard, in December of 2020.
A reception to remember Mary Ann and Bill will be held on Saturday, July 20, between 3-6 p.m., at The Evergreens on the campus of Lewis & Clark Community College.
