Martha J. Swann, 81, passed away at 8:25 pm Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at Rosewood Care Center in Alton
She was born on January 3, 1931 in Alton, IL, the daughter of John and Grace (Markland) Bower.
She married Thomas Fred Swann on July 23, 1955 in Alton, IL. He preceded her in death on July 27, 2001.
Martha graduated from Alton High School and later received a Masters degree from Illinois State University. She worked in the Bethalto School District #8 from 1953 until 1987, some of those years as an assistant principal. Then she taught health at Lewis and Clark Community College for 3 years, retiring in 1990. She was a member of College Avenue Presbyterian Church in Alton. She enjoyed making chocolates, working jigsaw puzzles, making jewelry, doll houses, doll furniture and scrapbooking.
She is survived by many loving nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great, great nieces and nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters, Phyllis Titchenal and Waverly Fields and two brothers, Robert Bower and John Bower Jr.
Visitation will be from 10:00 until services at 11:30 am on Saturday, October 27, 2012 at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto with Pastor Dale Jackson officiating.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or American Heart Association.
