Marjorie Horstman

Marjorie R. Horstman, 98, died at 7:40 am Tuesday, July 30, 2024 in International Falls, Minnesota.

Born April 5, 1926 in Wood River, she was the daughter of William Earl and Clara (Dolbow) Stocker.

She married Hugh Percival Horstman on August 14, 1948 in East Alton. He preceded her in death in August 2008.

Marjorie was a kind, loving and witty wife and mother who enjoyed traveling with her family. The highlight of each year was summer vacation on Lake Kabetogama in northern Minnesota where the family enjoyed boating, fishing, swimming and water skiing. This was Marjorie’s 70th consecutive summer on Kabetogama. She also enjoyed annual family fall road trips throughout the western states as well as many Christmases across Europe, in Panama and Costa Rica, and one dog sledding in the Canadian Rockies when she was 82. At home, she was an avid reader and enjoyed working in her yard. She was always very privately thrilled when she’d receive one of her many Pride Eye awards.

Marjorie was President of Alton Automobile Company, founded by her father-in-law in 1912 as the first Ford dealer in Alton, later operating as the landlord for Sears and Roebuck in downtown Alton, and since principally engaged in farming in Pike County, Illinois. She had a keen appreciation for farming and was involved until the time of her death.

In addition to her husband and parents, Marjorie was preceded in death by her son, Hugh Robert Horstman, her sister Elizabeth Fahnestock and brothers Robert, Richard, Lawrence and William Stocker. She is survived by her daughter Jean Horstman of Atlanta, Georgia.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 5, 2024 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton with a graveside service immediately following at Upper Alton Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Alton Area Animal Aid Association (5As) or a charity of choice.
