Marie (Mossman) Held, 104, of Brussels, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, with her family at her side.
Marie was born on July 20, 1920, in Golden Eagle, Illinois, and was the youngest daughter of Louis Mossman and Mary (Horman) Mossman. Marie grew up in Golden Eagle and the surrounding area. She graduated from Brussels High School, the Class of 1938. After graduation, Marie was employed at John Held’s grocery store until her marriage.
Marie married Robert “Bob” Held, the love of her life, on Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 1939, at St. Mary’s Church in Brussels, IL. They were blessed with four children Robert of Brussels, IL, Sharon of Roundup, MT, James of Alton, IL, and Barbara of Decatur, IL.
Marie was a very active member of St. Mary’s Church serving as a sactristin for many years. She was also a 50+ year member of the Altar Society serving in various positions. In 2012, Marie was chosen for the “Woman of Distinction” award for her dedication and services to the parish. One of her greatest pleasures was participating in the quilting circle spending many hours stitching and visiting with friends. On many occasions, there was a quilting frame in the dining room which resulted in numerous treasured quilts given to her family.
Marie was also involved in her local community. She was instrumental in bringing the public library to the area, and a 50+ year member of the Women’s Club, again serving various positions.
Her greatest joy was spending time with her family as a kind and loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother.
Marie is survived by her children, Robert (Bonnie) Held, Sharon McLeod, James (Sharon) Held, and Barbara Ward; grandchildren, Phil (Linda) Held, Jean (Rae) Payne, Cindy (Andy) DiCarlo, Kris (Kyle) Hagen, Eric Held, Kraig (Lisa) McLeod, Kelly (James) Brewer, Scott (Teresa) Held, Jamie (Bryan) Bertoletti, and Patrick (Rachael) Ward; Great Grandchildren, Jared Held, Lauren Held, Jordan Held, Jackie DiCarlo, Andrew DiCarlo, Alaina DiCarlo, Lynne (Mike) Adams, Cameron McLeod, Nathan McLeod, Taylor (Sam) Held, Alex Held, Mary Held, Aiden Bertoletti, Abby Bertoletti, Henry Ward, and Lucy Ward; and Great-Great Grandmother, Piper Adams, Graham Adams, and Charlotte Held. She leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews as well as a wide circle of friends.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, having been happily married for 48 years. She was also preceded in death by her siblings Frank Mossman and Bernice Heitzig.
Memorials may be made to either: Masses at St. Mary’s Church, St. Mary’s Cemetery, or Calhoun Ambulance.
Visitation will be held at Gress, Kallal, and Schaaf Funeral Home, 145 Community Ave. Brussels, IL from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday November 17, 2024.
Funeral Mass will be Monday, November 18, 2024, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Brussels, IL.
Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Brussels.
