Lois “Rita” (Ward) Gwyn, 93, of Godfrey passed away September 4, 2024 at home with her loving daughters and sons-in-law by her side. She was born May 5, 1931 to Duard B. Ward and Beulah E. (Cates) Ward Harpole. She attended Worden Public Schools. She made a profession of faith at New Hope Baptist Church in Worden. There she met the love of her life, Leo W. Gwyn Sr. and they were married on March 17, 1948. They settled in the Alton area and moved their membership to Calvary Baptist Church in Alton. She was a member there for over 60 years and was a member of Gideons International Auxiliary. She and her husband enjoyed traveling and spent the last 34 years in the Rio Grande Valley and were members of The First Baptist Church of Combes, TX. They were privileged to go with that church on a mission trip to Mexico. Surviving are two daughters, Glenda (Gwyn) Slagley Ganzer and her husband, David Ganzer of Galena, IL, and Melody (Gwyn) Burns and her husband, Terry Burns of Eureka, CA. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Charles “Aaron” Slagley III, David Slagley and his wife Crystal, Ret. Lt. Col Dr. Jeremy Slagley and his wife, Buffy, Michelle Burns and her husband, Casey Blandford, Nathael Burns and his wife Dr. Catherine Kramp, Melissa Lindsey and her husband, Michael: 11 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren and one brother-in-law. She was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather, husband, Leo Gwyn Sr. and infant son Leo Gwyn Jr., son-in-law, Charles Slagley Jr., four sisters and four brothers-in-law, and one great great grandchild. She was a great counselor and mother to all of us and loved by many. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 14, 2024 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Reverend Andre’ Dobson will officiate.
