Leila Ulmer, age 97, died peacefully at her home in Pocahontas, Illinois, on Thursday, July 17, 2025.
Leila was born on Friday, July 22, 1927, the daughter of John and Frieda (nee Iberg) Hunziker. She was born at home in Deck’s Prairie southwest of Grantfork, Illinois. She attended Deck’s Prairie country school through eighth grade and graduated from Highland High School in Highland, Illinois. At the age of 14, Leila began working at a bank in Marine, Illinois.
On February 22, 1951, she married Robert L. Ulmer, and they lived just outside of Pocahontas. After their divorce and while raising her four children, Leila worked as a secretary at Highland Supply. She then worked at the 1st National Bank in Greenville, Illinois, for 27 years before she retired in 2000 at the age of 72.
Leila was a member of the United Methodist Church in Pocahontas and a member of a Bowling Team in Greenville. She enjoyed playing with her grandchildren, crocheting, reading, exercising, watching old western TV shows, and doing crossword puzzles. In her younger days, she loved gardening, fishing at local ponds, and mushroom hunting.
Leila is survived by her four children, six grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren:

- Granddaughter - Whitney Marie Plunkett, Winston-Salem, IL
- Granddaughter - Lisa Suzanne Poubelle, Burke, VA
- Grandson - Philip Riley Hinch, Mulberry Grove, IL
- Granddaughter - Haley Jane Brewer, Winston-Salem, NC
- Great Grandchildren – 10 (2 in Greenville, IL; 2 in Mulberry Grove, IL; 3 in Winston-Salem, NC; and 3 in Burke, VA)
She was preceded in death by:
- Father - John Arnold Hunziker, died 1/4/1957
- Mother - Frieda Hunziker (nee Iberg), died 12/17/1978
- Sister - Ellen F. Hunziker, died 3/2/1963
- Sister - Marjorie M. Turner, died 6/6/1981
- Brother – Harvey J. Hunziker, died 3/28/2001
- Brother - Floyd H. (Carol) Hunziker, died 2/25/2010
- Grandson - Michael James Parr, died 7/27/2023
Visitation and funeral arrangements will be held at the Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland on Tuesday, July 22, 2025:
Visitation: 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
Funeral Service: 11:00 AM, with Chaplin Samantha Paulin, Bond County Hospice, officiating.
Interment will be directly after the funeral service at Highland City Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Bond County Hospice.
