Joseph Zimmer

Joseph "Leon" Zimmer, age 88, of Staunton, passed away Sunday, November 10, 2024, at St. Luke's Hospital in St. Louis.

Born December 1, 1935, in Harrisburg, IL, Leon married Theresa Epperheimer on December 25, 1971, in Alton, IL.  She preceded him in death along with his parents Harry and Stella (Basinger), his brothers Loy and Edward, and his grandson, Tate Zimmer.

He is survived by four children and their spouses, Matthew and Joey Zimmer of Bethalto; Erin Webb of Auburn, IL, Jake Zimmer of Staunton, and Luke and Carla Zimmer of Edwardsville; seven grandchildren, Ty Zimmer, Carter Zimmer, Sloan Webb, Evan Zimmer, Cooper Zimmer, Lola Zimmer, and Lainey Webb; and canine companion, Henry.

In his youth, Leon served in the U.S. Air Force. For the majority of his life, he was an employee of Monterrey Coal Company. He was a hard-working man who sometimes found time to hunt. Leon's greatest joy was spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, from 10 to 11 a.m.  Burial will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery in rural Bunker Hill.

Memorials may be made to Shriners Children's Hospital.
