Joseph John Podner, 96, of Bethalto, passed away on Sunday, July 28, 2024, at LaBella of Alton.
He was born on June 19, 1928, in Wood River, IL, the son of Nick J. and Antonette Podner. Joseph married Sandra Sue Hendricks on April 21, 1962 at Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto. She preceded him in death on July 5, 2022.
Joseph is a US Army Veteran, serving in the Korean War. He worked out of Local Union 338 in Wood River until his retirement in 1990. Joseph was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto. He grew up on the river and loved to fish and enjoyed a good fish fry. He enjoyed going to Beaver Dam as well. Joseph was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and NFL Football fan. Most of all, he loved to spend time with his friends and family.
Survivors include his children, Kevin (Peggy) Podner of Godfrey, Mary "Susan" (Bill) Lanzon of Naperville, IL, and David Podner of Bethalto; grandchildren, Jacob Podner, Jon Podner, Rachel Lanzon, Nick Lanzon, and Alyssa Lanzon.
Along with his parents and wife, Sandra, he was preceded in death by five sisters, and four brothers, Mary Bermes, Agnes Rathgeb, Ann Nelson, Sophie Pansic, Francis Lopez, Jack Podner, Sam Podner, Isadore Podner, and Frank Podner.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 1, 2024, from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto. Pastor Willard Meyer will officiate. Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens.
