On November 15, 2025, John Franklin Thompson of Godfrey, Illinois, passed away peacefully at his home at the age of 84. John was preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Marie Thompson, his brother, Michael “Denny” Thompson, and his sister, Gail (Miller).
He is survived by his beloved wife, Brenda (Teitelbaum), his two sons, Gregory (Karen Mergenthal) and Jeffrey (Jill Smith), and his three cherished grandchildren: Rebecca, Ryan, and Connor.
John dedicated his career to serving his country. He was on active duty in the United States Air Force and later served in the Missouri Air National Guard’s 131st Fighter Wing. Over the course of his distinguished 34-year military career, John achieved the rank of Chief Master Sergeant before retiring.
John was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed spending time fishing with family and friends and was also an avid golfer. John was an active member of several organizations, including the Alton American Legion Post 126, the Alton Motor Boat Club, and the Alton-Wood River Sportsmen’s Club.
John will remain forever in the hearts and memories of his family and friends. A Celebration of Life will be held in his honor at the Alton-Wood River Sportsmen’s Club on December 20, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Godfrey Fire Protection District.
