After saying goodbye and tipping his hat, John Leonard Schlafer passed away at the age of 86 on Friday, August 14, 2026 after pickin’ his third gallon of blueberries. Born in Freeport, Illinois on April 5, 1940 to Ralph Raymond and Charlotte Isabelle (Binninger) Schlafer. He leaves behind his wife, Judith Ann, two sons John Gregory Schlafer (Dianne) of Westlake, Texas and Michael Leonard Schlafer (Kristine) of Waynesville, North Carolina and two grandchildren, Jack Taylor Schlafer (Haley) and Grace Isabelle Schlafer.
John grew up on a dairy farm in Stockton, Illinois with his brothers, Ralph and David. Both preceded him in death. John left the family dairy farm with a full scholarship to study agricultural engineering. A graduate of the University of Illinois with Bachelor’s degrees in both Agricultural and Mechanical Engineering, a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, and a PhD in Applied Mathematics (1968). He worked in industry in refrigeration, instrumentation, and water treatment for 40 years as a Professional Engineer, and was licensed in two states and became a member of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Sciences. After retirement, he volunteered for many years at the National Great Rivers Museum in Alton, Illinois.
Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Cremation rites have been accorded.
Elias, Kallal, and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey, IL are in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Jerseyville or Alton Food Bank.
