John Mooney

John “Jack” Marshall Mooney, 81, was born on September 23, 1944, in St. Louis to Harold and Jane “Farrell” Mooney. Surrounded by the love of his family, he entered into rest on May 13, 2026, following a recent and unexpected diagnosis of esophageal cancer.

Jack was a 1962 graduate from Mercy High School and later earned a bachelor’s degree from Saint Louis University. While he rarely spoke about it, he proudly served in the United States Army. Throughout his careers, Jack worked for McDonnell Douglas and State Farm before eventually becoming a real estate appraiser. He created and grew his own company, Town & Country Appraisal, from which he retired.

Jack married the love of his life, Barbara June (née Koehler), on July 9, 1966. The early years of their marriage were spent in Florissant, Missouri, where they began building their life together and welcomed their first son, Brian Fitzgerald. Seven years later, their second son, Shawn Michael, was born. Not long after, the family relocated to Elsah, Illinois, where they built a home and spent the next 34 years raising their boys and creating countless memories together.

In 2012, Jack and Barb built what would become their final home in Grafton, Illinois. They remained there until Barb's passing in 2023. Following her loss, Jack purchased a condo in Grafton that overlooked the Mississippi River. He spent countless hours with new and old friends, enjoying the view from his deck. In 2025, he made his final move to Jerseyville, Illinois, where he lived alongside his son Shawn, daughter-in-law Nikki, and his beloved grandchildren.

Jack loved golf and spent countless hours on the greens, playing a variety of courses with friends and especially with his son, Shawn. He and his beloved wife, Barb, shared a passion for travel, with Ireland forever remaining their favorite destination. After a glass or two of

pinot grigio, family and friends could always count on Jack’s famous “Irish accent” making an appearance.

For decades, Jack could often be found beside Barb, gathered around a table with family and friends, playing endless rounds of Casino, Spades, Hearts, and Canasta. Even the day before his passing, he was still able to play one final game of Casino with Shawn - a memory that will be especially treasured.

Before Barb’s passing, some of Jack’s happiest days were spent making memories with their three grandchildren, taking them to places like the St. Louis Zoo and Grant’s Farm.

Jack will be remembered for the joy he brought to those around him. He deeply loved his family and friends, and his contagious smile and warm chuckle could light up a room. He had a way of making every moment feel special.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Jane; his beloved wife, Barb Mooney; and his oldest son, Brian Mooney.

Jack leaves behind a legacy of kindness, love, and deep care for his family. He is survived by his son, Shawn and Nikki Mooney; his cherished grandchildren, Payton (17), Samuel (15), and Olivia (12); and his close-knit siblings: Bob and Cheryl Mooney, Jane and Ron Bemis, Bryan and Bonnie Mooney, Joan and Jack Clayton, Judy and Patrick Hanses, Joyce and Mark Dorsey, Jennifer Brinson, and Janet and Bill Saulich. He will also be deeply missed by many nieces and nephews, extended family, dear friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Jack understood that his remaining time was short and often spoke about how much he wished he could be here to watch his grandchildren grow up and celebrate life’s milestones. More than anything, he hoped to see them graduate and continue building their futures. In his final days of hospice care, he held onto the goal of making it to his first grandchild’s graduation, missing the moment by only four days.

In lieu of flowers, and in keeping with Jack’s expressed wishes, memorial contributions may be directed toward the future educational funds of his grandchildren. A trust account has been established under “Jack’s Grandchildren” at Jersey State Bank.

Per Jack’s request, there will be no traditional funeral services. Friends and family are invited to attend an open-house-style Celebration of Life on June 7, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Lockhaven Country Club in Godfrey, Illinois.
