Jo Ann Wangelin (née Cunningham), 83, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Thursday, October 30, 2025 at her home in Godfrey, IL surrounded by family.
She was born on May 9, 1942 in Carrollton, Illinois to Joseph and Marjory (Smith) Cunningham and later raised by her stepmother A. Eileen (Smith) Cunningham after the passing of her mother.
She married Larry Ross Wangelin on March 19, 1966 at the 1st Baptist Church in Carrollton, IL. Together they shared 59 wonderful years together with their family.
Ann graduated from Carrollton High School in 1960 and went on to get her Bachelor's in nursing from NIU in 1964. Ann spent her life in service to others. She worked as a RN for many years after graduation at The Illinois Pediatric Institute, Alton Memorial, Family Services as a visiting nurse, Alton State Hospital, and finally at Alton School District where she remained until she retired in 2002. Ann was never happier than when she was spending time with her family and friends, traveling the world, or spending time with her pets. She was led by her faith and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Alton where she served as an Elder and a Deacon.
Ann is survived by two sons, Stephen Wangelin, and Lee Wangelin; two grandchildren, Brittany (Cameron) Gilmore of Alton, IL, and Emma Wangelin of Godfrey, IL; two great-grandchildren, Amelia and Oliver Gilmore; sisters, Jane (Brian) Mooberry and Kay (Steve) Ogden; brothers, Eric Cunningham, Daniel (Debra) Cunningham, Arthur (Mary) Cunningham.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, John Cunningham.
Visitation will be at First Presbyterian Church in Alton, Illinois on November 15, 2025 from 9 am until time of service at 11 am with Pastor Ian Edward Caveny officiating. Burial to follow at Hamburg cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Leukemia Society or First Presbyterian Church.
