Jeanne Newbury

Jeanne Lee Newbury, 84 of Edwardsville, IL passed away Friday, October 31, 2025, peacefully in her sleep at home.  

She was born June 20, 1941, in Prescott, Iowa to the late Ray and Goldie (Ewart) Garner. She grew up in SW Iowa where she met and married Robert “Bob” Newbury. Bob joined the Army and Jeanne went with him traveling the US during his service time. They finally settled in St. Charles County Missouri where Lisa was born in 1971, and Bob passed away in 1987. Jeanne and Lisa moved to Edwardsville, IL soon after to be closer to family. She is now reunited with Lisa and Bob.  

Jeanne’s life was centered around her daughter, best friend and reason for living Lisa Lynn, who passed away in 2019, and it broke her heart.  She loved traveling and spoiling Lisa, shopping, cooking, and flower gardening.  When she wasn’t traveling, free time was spent with her other loves Lisa Lynn and Special Olympics. Jeanne became involved with Special Olympics as a parent over 45 years ago, first in Missouri and for the last 30 years as a volunteer, organizer and coach for Illinois Special Olympics and the Region II Team where she wore many hats.  

She will be deeply missed by her two special nieces and caregivers, Debbie (Steve) Simmons of Godfrey and Dede (Rick) Snyder of Fosterburg.  She is survived by her sister-in-law Blenda Newbury of Bethalto, brother Gerald (Kathy) Garner of Iowa, nieces Patricia Dennis and Diane Schmid of Edwardsville and Michelle (Troy) Creveling of Iowa, nephews Bruce (Janice) Brown of Moro, Doug Garner of MO, and Craig (Melissa) Garner of Iowa, lots of great and great-great nieces and nephews, the Newbury families of MO, many friends and extended families also the Special Olympics athletes and families including Amy, Dane, Joe, Jerry, Denise, Josh, Carolyn, and the Wrobbel family. 

Along with her husband and daughter she was preceded in death by her two brothers and sister-in-law, Marvin (Sue) and Ed Garner; a sister, Margorie (Marion) Brown, a brother-in-law, Jim Newbury, 2 nephews, Dr. Phillip Dennis Sr., and Don Schmid, and other loved family members.  

Visitation will be from 10am until time of service at Noon Saturday, November 15, 2025, at Immanuel United Church of Christ - Hamel, 5838 Staunton Road, Edwardsville, IL 

A private family burial will be held later.  

Memorial donations can be made to the Special Olympics Region II Team, Family Hospice of Belleville, or the family.
