James Burns
Gillespie | Save
James 'Jim' Edward Burns, 67, formerly of Grafton, Illinois, died at 3:42 p.m. on Saturday, November 2 in his home in Gillespie, Illinois. Jim, one of three children born to the late Stan and Peg (DeSherlia) Burns, was born on August 27, 1952, in Alton, Illinois. He was raised in Grafton, Illinois and graduated from Jersey Community High School.
Jim worked as a welder, pipe fitter, electrician, and boilermaker for many years, but his final and favorite job was working as an HVAC technician at McKendree University where he made many friends and was the recipient of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award for his dedication to helping students who live far from home. According to the students who nominated him, Jim served as a surrogate 'father' to them and not only offered advice but oftentimes purchased food for them and helped them find furniture, clothing, and computers. Jim spent his life working hard and making friends wherever he went. He always greeted people with a huge smile on his face, he maintained a personal relationship with our Lord, and he was always willing to help others in need. Jim's other passions included spending time with family, caring for his beloved pets, riding motorcycles, and just being a good friend to many. Jim's true joy, however, was spending time with his daughter and grandsons.
Surviving are his daughter, Heather Weirich of Gillespie, his two grandsons, David Weirich of Kansas City, Missouri and Robert Weirich of Gillespie, his brother and sister-in-law, Randy and Becky Burns of Grafton, an aunt, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Sandy Romano.
Per his wishes, he will be cremated. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
