Gustav Kuether

A Life of Faith, Service, and Joyful Mischief

It is with profound sorrow and the sure and certain hope of the resurrection that we announce the passing of Rev. Gustav Henry “Gus” Kuether, a beloved pastor, missionary, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Gus, who was also affectionately known as Fritz or "Fritzel" (from the German snickelfritz, meaning "little rascal"), entered into the eternal embrace of his Lord on Monday, November 17, 2025, in Town & Country, Missouri. He was 88 years old.

Born on July 11, 1937, in Parkersburg, WV, Gus was named after his two grandfathers and was baptized into the Christian faith on September 12, 1937, at the Federated Church in Pomeroy, OH, a faith that would become the cornerstone of his long and purposeful life. He was the son of the late Rev. Ralph Leslie Giese Kuether and Christine Marie (Deters) Kuether, and his journey of faith was confirmed on March 18, 1951, at St. John's E&R Church in La Crosse, WI.

Gus’s life was a beautiful tapestry woven with threads of service, learning, and music. From his early days playing clarinet in the La Crosse Civic Band to his first jobs at the local library and camera store, he exhibited a tireless work ethic and a curious mind. This foundation led him to Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Illinois, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1959, and onward to Eden Theological Seminary in Webster Groves, MO, where he received his Bachelor of Divinity in 1963.

It was during his seminary years that his path was divinely intertwined with that of Suzanne L. Higgins. They were united in marriage on August 4, 1962, at Emanuel United Church of Christ in Manchester, MI, the very church where he would later be ordained on June 16, 1963. Their 63-year partnership was a testament to shared faith and deep love, and he was preceded in her passing by only a few months on March 19, 2025.

In 1963, answering a call to global ministry, Gus and Sue traveled to the Instituto de Lengua (Language Institute) in San Jose, Costa Rica a mere 3 months after the birth of their son, Scott. They then went on to serve as a missionary with the United Church Board for World Ministries in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, from 1964 to 1976. It was there they welcomed their daughter, Lynda, adding to their growing family in 1966. A second daughter, Lori, would complete their family during a rare return to the States in 1969. His global service continued as World Service Secretary in St. Louis, MO, and later as an Associate Conference Minister for the Illinois Conference of the UCC.

Gus’s pastoral heart found community in Millstadt and Belleville, IL, with a final home at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Belleville, IL, where he served as Associate Pastor from 1995 until his official retirement in 2003. Even in retirement, his ministry continued, most notably as the Supervisor of the BeFriender Ministry, a role that perfectly suited his gift for compassionate listening.

Beyond his official titles, Gus’s greatest legacy is the love he poured into his family. He was a devoted father to Scott (Sandy) Kuether, Lynda (Jennifer) Kuether, and Lori (John) Schultz. He was a doting grandfather to Brittany and Emily (Matt) Kuether; and Matthew (Alexa), William, and Zane Schultz, taking immense joy in baptizing and later confirming each of them, marking their spiritual milestones with his own hands and heart. His eyes would twinkle with his inner "Fritzel" when surrounded by his family.

Rev. Gustav Kuether was a man of great faith, deep intellect, and gentle strength. He lived a life of profound service, not only from the pulpit but in everyday acts of kindness and connection. He will be remembered for his unwavering belief in God's grace, his commitment to justice, and the mischievous smile that hinted at the "little rascal" within.

You are invited to a Celebration of Life service to be held on Sunday afternoon, December 14, 2025, at St. Paul United Church of Christ, Belleville, IL. The service will begin at 3 pm with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, please bring your good and happy memories of Gus to be shared by all. Should you wish to make a memorial gift, it can be made to Eden Theological Seminary (475 E. Lockwood Ave., St. Louis, MO 63119 - https://www.eden.edu ), Global Ministries UCC (1300 East 9th Street, Suite 1100, Cleveland, OH 44114), St. Paul UCC (115 W “B” Street, Belleville, IL – www.stpaulucc.org ) or the charity/mission of your choice. Condolences may be expressed online at www.rennerfh.com.

Though our hearts are heavy, we rejoice that Gus is now home, reunited with his beloved Suzanne, his parents, Rev. Ralph L & Christine Kuether; and his brother and sister-in-law, Rev. Ralph D. & Penny Kuether hearing the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant."
