Gloria Hoehne (née Schachtsiek), 82, of Columbia, Missouri, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2026, at the home of her daughter in Smithton, Illinois. She was born on June 22, 1944, in Hannibal, Missouri.
Gloria was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in West Ely, Missouri. On September 3, 1967, she married the love of her life, John Hoehne, at the same church where her faith journey began. Together they shared nearly 58 years of marriage until John's passing on July 4, 2025.
Gloria was raised on her family's dairy farm outside Monroe City, Missouri. She often spoke with pride and affection about attending the one-room schoolhouse in West Ely, Missouri. After graduating from Monroe City High School, Gloria earned her teaching degree from Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Nebraska.
After their marriage, Gloria and John made their home in Kahoka, Missouri, where she spent many years teaching first grade in the Clark County School District. She often reminisced about her first-grade students, remembering them with great affection throughout her life. Later, the family moved to Columbia, Missouri, where Gloria continued her passion for nurturing children as a teacher at Countryside Nursery School.
A faithful member of Campus Lutheran Church in Columbia, Gloria served through numerous ministries and fellowship groups. She especially enjoyed Tuesday morning coffee with friends and Wednesday Bible study, where her faith and friendships continued to grow.
Above all, Gloria treasured her family. Her children and grandchildren were the greatest joy of her life, and she rarely missed an opportunity to attend their school events, sporting competitions, and special occasions. She expressed her love through hospitality, always keeping homemade cookies and other treats ready to share with family and friends. Gloria took pride in baking, especially her homemade pies with her homemade flaky crust.
Gloria will be remembered for her unwavering faith, gentle kindness, servant's heart, and the love she freely shared with everyone around her. Her legacy lives on in the countless children she taught, the family she cherished, and the many lives she touched with her warmth, generosity, and grace.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Hoehne; her parents, Emmett and Irene (née Frankenbach) Schachtsiek; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Albert and Leona Hoehne; and her sister-in-law, Marcia Schachtsiek.
Gloria is survived by her loving children, Susan (Todd) Mirly of Smithton, Illinois, and David (Amy) Hoehne of Ashland, Missouri. She was a devoted grandmother to Kate (Samuel) Lohman, Abby (Jacob) Reuter, Grant Hoehne, and Griffin Hoehne, and was overjoyed to become the great-grandmother of Samson Reuter. She is also survived by her brothers, Lowell Schachtsiek and Alan (Reta) Schachtsiek; her sister, Janet (Doug) Wohlers; her sister-in-law, Harriet (David) Myers; and many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
