George P. Lyles, 83, of Bridgeport and formerly of Edwardsville, Illinois, passed away at 7:47 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at Alton Memorial Hospital in Alton, Illinois.
He was born July 23, 1942, in Lawrenceville, Illinois, a son of the late Paul Titus and Alma Mae (Wilcox) Lyles. George married the love of his life, Jane (Lewis) Lyles, on June 30, 1972, in Pinkstaff, Illinois. She preceded him in death on October 17, 2013.
George retired from the Clark Oil Refinery in Hartford, Illinois, after 20 years of dedicated service as an engineer. He was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, serving his country during the Vietnam War.
He found great joy in the outdoors, especially through fishing and hunting. Above all, George cherished his family. The time he spent with them and the memories they created together will be held close by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his loving daughter and son-in-law, Joie and Chris Lyerla of Bethalto and son Jeff Lyles of Glen Carbon; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three siblings, Paul and Marlene Lyles of Los Angeles, California, Phyllis Butts of Los Angeles, California and Ozeta Unsworth of Belmont, North Carolina; a sister-in-law, Gloria Lyles of Bolingbrook, Illinois; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
In addition to his beloved wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three siblings, Beatrice Smith, Carl Lyles, and Sue Wimbley.
In celebration of his life, a memorial gathering will be held at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road, Glen Carbon, Illinois 62034, on Saturday, May 16, 2026, from 12:00 noon until the time of a memorial service at 1:00 p.m., with Pastor LaVontas Hairston officiating.
