Gay Miller

Gay Carol Miller, nee Reynolds, 79, of Belleville, IL, born April 2, 1946, in Decatur, IL, passed away Monday, February 9, 2026, at the Dammert Care Center, Belleville, IL.

Gay was a devoted wife, mother, Mima, and friend. During her husband’s 25-year career in the United States Air Force, she dedicated herself to building a loving and supportive home for their family across multiple moves and duty stations. Deeply involved in her community, she served on the Belle Valley School Board for 15 years and shared her artistic talents through her work in the art department at Eckert’s Country Store. Gay was a longtime member of Union United Methodist Church in Belleville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin F. and Wilmetta A., nee Merritt, Reynolds.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 58 years, Walter John “Wally” Miller, III, whom she married on June 10, 1967; her son, Kevin M. (Kristen) Miller; her daughter, Kristin M. (P.K., V) Johnson; and five cherished grandchildren, Preston K. Johnson VI, Kaden M. Johnson, Jack R. Miller, Brooks W. Miller, and Tate A. Miller.

Gay’s early years in Decatur were filled with joy, especially her time spent on her grandparents’ farm. She formed lifelong friendships and developed a love for art that continued throughout her life. In high school, she noticed the “cute paperboy” on her route, a young man named Wally, and their teenage friendship grew into a lifelong love story. After attending Illinois State University for two years to study art, she and Wally married before he joined the Air Force in 1967, beginning a journey that took them around the country and Canada before settling at Scott Air Force Base in 1977.

Gay’s life was grounded in family, creativity, and connection. She was an exceptionally loving mother whose warmth, laughter, and generosity touched everyone around her. She never missed a chance to support her children and grandchildren, at games, concerts, school events, and every moment in between. Her artistic spirit flourished through years of crafting, her small business Country Wheat and Co., and her decorating work at Eckert’s, where she helped bring seasonal and holiday magic to the farm.

In 2004, Gay lost her hearing, but she met the challenge with bravery and optimism. After receiving a cochlear implant, she became a compassionate advocate for others considering the device, offering them encouragement, honesty, and hope.

Gay’s life was defined by love — especially the steadfast partnership she shared with Wally. In her final years, as Alzheimer’s progressed, he cared for her with the same devotion that had guided their entire life together.

She leaves behind a legacy of warmth, creativity, kindness, and unwavering love. Anyone who is fortunate enough to know her will carry her spirit with them always.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Dammert Care Center and Hospice of Southern Illinois for their exceptional care and compassion.
