Gary M. Matevey, 82, of Gillespie, IL, died at St. Francis Hospital, Litchfield, IL on Tuesday, August 23, 2022, at 10:26 pm.
He was born July 29, 1940, in Litchfield, IL to Michael Matevey & Helen Herrin Matevey.
He married Patricia Ann Campbell Matevey on October 12, 1968, in Benld, IL.
He was retired after having been a ballistics tester for Olin Corp. Gary was a veteran of the US Army after having served during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Gary played football, basketball, and track. He was the 100-yard dash State of Illinois Qualifier. He still holds the 100-yard dash record at GHS. Gary received numerous dog of the year awards with the Field Trial of Illinois. He was a charter member of the Macoupin County Field Trials Club where he also served as president, secretary, and treasurer. He was an avid field trials enthusiast. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was an Illini and Cubs sports fan. Gary enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his spouse, Pat Matevey of Gillespie, IL, siblings, Jim (Jo Ann) Matevey of Midway, IL, Suzanne (Kenny) Fritzsche of Auburn, IL, and several nieces, and nephews.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law, Mildred Campbell Stetters, and brother-in-law, John T. Campbell.
