Gary Lee Clark, age 74, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, September 26, 2025. Born and raised in Granite City, Gary was the beloved son of the late Artie and Virgie (Bilyeu) Clark. His life was a testament to service, strength, and compassion.
A proud Vietnam era veteran, Gary served his country with honor in the United States Coast Guard, where he was part of a courageous search and rescue unit. After his military service, he worked briefly for the Granite City Fire Department, bravely protecting his community. He then transitioned to Granite City’s water treatment plant, where he worked as an operating engineer until his retirement at age 55.
Gary was a man of many passions. He found joy in the open road on his motorcycle, laughter in classic episodes of The Three Stooges, and comfort in the company of lifelong friends. He was a devoted father, a loving brother, and a loyal friend—always ready with a helping hand and a warm smile. Gary never met a stranger, and his charm left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Rosalee Perigen and Robert Clark.
He is survived by his cherished son and daughter-in-law, Brandon and Sarajane Clark of Saint Louis, Missouri; his dear sister, Beulah “Bootsie” Gann of Katy, Texas; and a wide circle of extended family and friends who will carry his memory forward.
Visitation will be held on Monday, October 6, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Irwin Chapel in Granite City, IL.
A celebration of Gary’s life will take place on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at 11:30 a.m., also at Irwin Chapel, followed by interment with full military honors at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, MO, conducted by the United States Coast Guard.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Disabled American Veterans (D.A.V.), with contributions accepted at the funeral chapel.
