Fern E. Cassidy, 93, passed away at 4:33 am on Tuesday, October 3, 2023.
She was born in Ben, Arkansas, the daughter of Hiram and Beulah (Patterson) Doolin, where she spent her cherished childhood years. Fern later moved to St. Louis, MO, where she resided independently until moving to Foxes Grove Supportive Living in Wood River, IL in 2014.
She became a beautician in the early 1960s, and loved working in her home. This choice granted her the invaluable flexibility to attend to the needs of her family and ensure that they enjoyed delicious, home-cooked meals together. Fern's culinary skills were renowned, and her cinnamon rolls and mother-in-law pork chops were cherished by all who were fortunate enough to taste them. Fern loved music, and she sang in the church choir for many years. She also enjoyed sewing, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Outside of her family, her next love was animals. Her favorite television programs were about any type of animal. Fern's love wasn't limited to mere observation-on several occasions, she nurtured and hand-fed baby birds until they were strong enough to take flight. Her devotion to animals also extended to her pet parakeets, one of whom held a special place in her heart. He would talk to her and sit on her coffee cup in the morning.
She is survived by her two sons, Michael Cassidy (Marilyn) of Glen Carbon and Mark Cassidy of Bethalto, IL; a brother, Jimmy Doolin of Overland Park, KS; four
grandchildren, Laura Brasses (Samuel), Bryan Cassidy, Ryan Anderson, and Zachary Palumbo; and two great grandchildren, Jonah Cassidy and Luke Brasses.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Melissa Cassidy-Morris; four sisters, Marie, Mary, Hazel, and Ollie; and a brother, Finis.
Per her wishes, cremation rites were accorded and a private family celebration will be held at a later date.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt appreciation to BJC Hospice and the compassionate "second family" at Foxes Grove Supportive Living in Wood River for their unwavering support and care, which allowed the granting of Fern’s wish to remain at home.
