Evelyn “Lynn” Almeter, 91, died at 11:08 a.m. Saturday, October 28, 2023 at her home in Alton. She was born on August 3, 1932, the only daughter of Henry G. and Mamie E. (Ross) Almand on a farm in Turner County, Georgia.
During the Korean War she was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Women’s Air Force stationed at Ft. Meyer, VA where she met James K. Almeter, who was in the Army. They were married in Arlington, VA, on November 1, 1952. He died August 16, 1986 in Godfrey, IL and was a practicing Alton attorney.
She graduated high school in Moultrie, Georgia, attended Illinois Wesleyan College in Bloomington, IL, and the University of Illinois. She was active in civic and artistic activities in the Alton area for many years. She was one of the first members of Alton Children’s Theater and helped to produce and act in many plays. She was a past president of Alton Little Theater, a member of St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary, served on The Easter Seals VIP Committee, and the Lewis & Clark College Committee.
She was instrumental in starting the Christmas Gift-Wrap Project that has been the major fund-raiser for more than twenty years for the Alton Community Junior Service League. She was involved with the Girl Scouts of America as a leader and with the Boy Scouts of America as a Cub and Webelo leader. She was a passionate genealogist and took great pride in learning about her ancestors and was proud to be a member of the Ninan Edwards Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She was a member of SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Alton. Surviving are her daughter; Jan S. Christopher of Wood River, four sons, James K. Almeter II and his wife, Sarah of Godfrey, Jeffrey B. Almeter and his wife Shawn of Alton, John M. Almeter and his wife Lisa of Virginia, and Jay D. Almeter of Alton, IL. She leaves her much-loved grandchildren; Katherine and Daniel Christopher, James K. Almeter III, Joseph and Jennifer Almeter, Sara Maltimore, Justin and Jessica Almeter, Jeremy, Joshua, Jordan and Jack Almeter, Zachary and Jacob Almeter.
She leaves ten great-grandchildren. She leaves Alma Quesnel who lived a long time with her family and loved as a daughter. She is survived by her brother, James R. Almand and his wife Ester of Seven Springs, NC as well as many loving cousins, nieces, nephews and friends, including a dear friend, Laurie Middleton of Alton.
Her parents, her husband, two brothers, Ralph G. Almand and Ronald J. Almand, and two great grandchildren; Zander Pount and Kailey Almeter preceded her in death. A wake service will begin at 3:30 p.m. followed by visitation from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Friday, November 3, 2023 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 4, 2023 at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Alton. Father Jeff Holtman will officiate. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Godfrey with full military honors.
