Eugene Ganschinietz

Eugene “Gene” Edward Ganschinietz Jr., 87, of Fairview Heights, IL, born Saturday, December 3, 1938, in E. St. Louis, IL, passed away Tuesday, February 3, 2026 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in Saint Louis, MO.

Gene retired from Continental Grain, in St. Louis, MO where he worked in the barge traffic department for 17 years. Prior to working for Continental Grain, Gene worked for the Eastern Weighing and Inspection Bureau and the traffic department for Hunt Wesson Foods, both in St. Louis, MO. He later worked in the Safety and Security Department of Memorial Hospital in Belleville, IL and for PakMail in Swansea, IL.

Gene gave 36 years of his time as a volunteer member of the Belleville, IL Auxiliary Police, retiring as Assistant Chief in 1995. He was a member of St. John United Church of Christ, Fairview Heights, IL, St. Louis Jazz Club and as a member of the St. Clair County Genealogical Society, had traced his family back to Germany in the 1840’s and Prussia in the 1820’s. Hobbies included cooking and reading.

He was preceded in death by his:

  • Parents, Eugene E. and Sidonia J., nee Teckenbrock, Ganschinietz
  • Brother, Joseph Ganschinietz

Surviving are his:

  • Wife, Susan E., nee Biedenweg, Ganschinietz of Fairview Heights, IL whom he married on August 6, 1977 in Skokie, IL
  • Daughter, Pamela R. (Kenneth L.) Echternacht of Crestview, FL
  • Son, Brian T. Ganschinietz of Fairview Heights, IL
  • Grandchildren:
    • Justin Echternacht
    • Megan Carpenter
  • Great granddaughter, Alyssa Carpenter

Memorials: Memorials may be made to St. John United Church of Christ or the St. Clair Genealogical Society of Belleville, IL.

Visitation: Visitation from 3:00 p.m.- 7:00 p.m., Thursday, February 12, 2026, at Kurrus Funeral Home in Belleville, IL.

Services: Memorial Service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, February 12, 2026, at Kurrus Funeral Home
