Edward Friedel

Edward “Joe” Joseph Friedel, 65, of East Alton passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2026 at his home. He was born on July 26, 1960 in St. Louis to Edward Henry and Audrey Marie (Snyders) Friedel. He married Patricia “Trish” Holmes on September 17, 1983 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Bethalto. 

Joe served two years in the Army, during which he was stationed in Germany. He retired from DHL in 2021 after 36 years of service. He was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church in Wood River where he also served as a Lector and Eucharistic minister. He was also a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

Joe was a very kind man and a generous person. He could talk to anyone; no one was a stranger. He was an avid gardener and loved tinkering in his yard, followed everywhere by his dogs Bernie and Charlie. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He loved spending time with his family more than anything in the world.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Trish Friedel of East Alton; sons, Daniel (Kayla) Friedel of Cottage Hills and Father Michael Friedel of Springfield; granddaughter, Ruby Friedel; brother Nick (Jess) Friedel of Staunton and sisters, Angie Rinderer of Highland, René (Bob) Fite of Bunker Hill and Sue (Steve) Vogel of Midway; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother in law, Lee Rinderer.

Visitation will be held from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, May 31 at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Wood River, where a Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday with Father Michael Friedel as Celebrant and Father Don Wolford as Concelebrant. Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Garden in Bethalto. Paynic Home for Funerals is entrusted with professional services.
