Donald Metzler, 90, of Alton passed Thursday, May 14 at Evelyn’s House in Creve Coeur, MO surrounded by family.
He was born June 4, 1935 in St. Louis, MO. He married Jo Ann Schreiber November 17, 1956 in Collinsville.
Don was raised in the Des Peres Lutheran Children’s Home. He worked for Kreider Trucking for 30 years, where he served as president. After retiring he went to work as a preneed service counselor for over 20 years with SCI, which operated Elias-Smith Funeral Homes, Valhalla Memorial Park, Jacoby Wise Funeral Home, Rose Lawn Memory Gardens, Staten Funeral Home, Lakeview Memorial Gardens and several others.
Don did not like to be idle, so he went to work as a driver for Weber Chevrolet. He served two terms as the Chairman for the Madison County Republican Party. He served on the school board at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Collinsville and represented them at Holy Cross Lutheran School as well as Metro East Lutheran High School.
He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed boating, camping, yardwork, golfing and eagle watching. He sang Barbershop Harmony for over 50 years. Don also volunteered at the National Great Rivers Museum for 11 years.
In addition to his wife, Jo Ann Metzler of Alton; he is survived by two sons, Don (Kristine) Metzler, Jr. of Maple Grove, MN and Mike Metzler of Alton; five grandchildren, Zachary Metzler, Benjamin Metzler, Autumn Metzler, Emily (Jack) Eivazzadeh, and Audrey Thorp; and two great-great grandchildren, Jaxson and Lincoln Eivaz.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cheryl Metzler and twin brother, Ronald Metzler.
Memorial visitation will be Friday, May 29, 2026 from 4-7 p.m. at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights. The family will hold memorial services at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 30 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1300 Beltline Rd., Collinsville.
