Surrounded by her family’s love, Della J. Hardwick-Hayes passed peacefully into eternal rest on July 25, 2025.
Della was born on May 15, 1941 in Alton IL to William W. Hardwick and Mary A. (Loyd) Hardwick. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Kenneth Hardwick, sister Jacqueline K. Owens, brother-in-law Edward Owens and daughter-in-law Janie McCann.
On September 4, 1959, Della married Paul M. McCann. He survives as do their children: David McCann of Alton, Sue (Dave) White of Menifee, CA and Brett (Atoosa) McCann of Ballwin, MO.
On July 20, 2007 Della married Earl H. Hayes and he survives.
Della is also survived by her cherished grandchildren, Dustin (Danielle) McCann of Roxana IL, Jacob McCann of Maryland Heights MO, Dylan (Alexandria) White of La Quinta, CA, Sydney White of Menifee, CA, Emir Alci of Ballwin MO, Ashley Reed of Alton IL and great grandchildren Reese McCann, Rainey Reed and Xander Highsmith.
Della had a life long passion for gardening. She could grow outstanding tomatoes but her focus was on plants, flowers (particularly day lilies) and koi ponds. Everything she touched in her many gardens over the years flourished and brought her great joy.
Della also enjoyed playing cards, listening to music, dancing and traveling.
Her greatest love of all was spending time with her family and friends. Della was an amazing conversationalist, wonderful storyteller and possessed an easy sense of humor. Her beautiful smile and laugh always lit up the room.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 7, 2025 from 3:00 pm until the time of service at 5:00pm at Elias, Kallal, and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey, IL.
Memorials can be made to Multiple Sclerosis or Vietnam Veterans of America.
Della is forever loved and will be greatly missed.
