Dawn Vahle

Dawn Elizabeth Vahle, 60, passed away on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at her home.
Born on July 4, 1966, in Jerseyville, Illinois, she was the daughter of Donald E. and Ruby Mae (Arnold) Vahle. She graduated with the Class of 1984 from Jersey Community High School and was known by many throughout the community from her time as a waitress at Nick's Pancake House in Jerseyville, where her warm smile and friendly conversation made everyone feel welcome.

Although Jerseyville would always be home, Dawn possessed a free spirit that led her on a journey through Texas, New York, Ohio, and New Mexico, always searching for happiness, new experiences, and a life filled with love. No matter where life took her, however, the people she loved remained at the center of her world.

She found her greatest joy in being surrounded by her family. Some of her happiest moments were spent enjoying pool days with her grandchildren, preparing home-cooked meals for those she loved, baking cookies, spoiling her beloved dog, Dash, and making memories with her cherished granddaughter and best friend, Kennedy. She had a remarkable gift for making people feel seen, accepted, and loved. Dawn may not have measured her life by material possessions, but by the countless acts of kindness, generosity, and unwavering love she shared with others. She gave freely of herself, offering her time, her compassion, and her heart to anyone who needed them. Those gifts became the legacy she leaves behind.

She is survived by her father and stepmother, Donald and Laniece Vahle of Jerseyville; her children, Megan and James Schmidt of Brighton, Kyle Focken of New Orleans, Louisiana, and T.J. and Estelle Griffin of St. Louis, Missouri; four beloved grandchildren, James, Oliver, Elijah, and Kennedy Schmidt, all of Brighton; three sisters, Catherine and Clinton Sandlian of Jerseyville, Vicki and Larry Welsh of Jerseyville, and Sandra Vahle and Matt Walsh of Fort Myers, Florida; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever carry her love in their hearts.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruby Mae Vahle; the love of her life, John James Griffin of Newburgh, New York; and her grandparents, Harold and Bessie Arnold and Edward and Florence Vahle.

Though her family grieves her absence, they find peace in knowing Dawn has been reunited with those who went before her. Her gentle spirit, generous heart, and unconditional love will continue to live on through the lives she touched. She will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and always loved.

Memorial Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of Memorial Service at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 1, 2026 at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.
