Christopher Taylor

Christopher John Taylor, 70, passed away on Friday, May 22, 2026 at Mercy Hospital in St. Louis.

He was born on March 19, 1956 in Aledo, Illinois, the son of Kenneth and Dorothy (McMullen) Taylor. John graduated from Aledo High School with the Class of 1974 and went on to obtain his degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois.

He married Sherrie Hunter on August 7, 1982 in Aledo, and together they built a life centered around family, friendship and making memories. Following their marriage, John and Sherrie made their home in Jacksonville, where they resided for 40 years before moving to Grafton in 2019 after his retirement.

John dedicated many years to his career in civil engineering. He began his career working for the Illinois Department of Transportation in Springfield from 1979 until 1984, before accepting employment with Illinois Valley Paving. He rounded out his career working with United Contractors Midwest, retiring in 2019.

He lived life the way he wanted, full of laughter and never afraid to have a good time. He treasured the moments spent with family and friends, especially the time he spent with his two granddaughters, who brought endless pride and joy to his life. Whether he was out on the water boating with his Grafton buddies, heading to another vacation, cruising around on his e-bike, building something in his workshop, or cheering on (and occasionally cursing) the Illinois Fighting Illini, he enjoyed every moment life had to offer.

John is survived by his wife, Sherrie Taylor of Grafton; a daughter and son in-law, Alissa and Ben Loos (granddaughters Mia and Haley) of Fenton, MO.; two brothers and their spouses, Pete (Sandy) Mason of Bonita Springs, FL., and Dale and Lisa Taylor of Oquawka, IL.; a sister in-law, Deborah “Deb” Anderson of Andover, IL.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Lindsay Taylor and a brother, Terry Taylor.

Per his wishes, cremation rites were conducted and a celebration of life will be held from 2 p,m. - 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2026 at the Grafton American Legion.
