Charlotte Anne Hawkins, 84 passed away at 7:05 pm Sunday April 1, 2012 at Christian North East Hospital in St. Louis, MO.

 

She was born in Wood River Township on December 28, 1927 and was the daughter of the late Ralph and Jesse (Haycraft) Culp.

She married William W. Hawkins in Wood River on September 10, 1949 at the 1st Baptist Church in Wood River. He preceded her in death on April 15, 2002.

Charlotte was employed at Olin Ammunition Company from 1945 to 1956. She was then employed at the Madison County Superintendent of Schools from 1967 to 1993 where she worked with the school lunch program and special education program.  She was a member of the 1st Baptist Church in Bethalto where she sang in the choir, was a Sunday school teacher, and held a seat on the board of the Southern Baptist Association training for setting up new Sunday schools. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, cooking and gardening. She also loved spending time with her dogs Dee Dee, BJ, Samson, and Lancelot and her cat, Lila.

She is survived by one daughter and her husband; Deborah Anne Hawkins and Allen Shomaker of Edwardsville, special niece: Patti Culp of Bethalto, a special nephew: David Culp and spouse Tina of Alton, special friends, Dick and Lucy Mann of Bethalto.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son; Richard W. Hawkins, a sister Anita Helen Culp, a brother and sister-in-law; R. Thomas and Izella Culp, and dear friend, June Unterbrink.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Thursday April 5, 2012 at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton, IL where funeral services will be held at 10 am Friday April 6, 2012 with Pastor Chip Faulkner officiating.

Burial will follow at Short Cemetery in Forest Homes.

Memorials may be directed to the 1st Baptist Church of Bethalto or the Fosterburg Baptist Church.
