Charles Merzian, age 97, of Fairview Heights, IL, passed away on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in O’Fallon, IL.
Charles was born on October 12, 1927, in Granite City, IL, a son of the late Bedros and Esther (Markarian) Merzian.
Charles was a World War II Veteran who proudly served in the United States Army. On November 6, 1959, Charles married Mary Chobanian, the love of his life in Racine, WI, and Mary passed away on October 25, 2004.
Charles was a faithful and dedicated member of Holy Virgin Mary & Shoghagat Armenian Church in Swansea, IL, where he loved volunteering and helping out in any capacity. He was the owner and operator of Computer Micrographix Inc., in St. Louis, MO, and he retired in 1992.
Charles was Granite City’s first two-time state wrestling champion. He was inducted into Granite City Sports Hall of Fame and was inducted into IWCOA Hall of Fame (Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association). His greatest joy was spending time with his family, whom he loved dearly. Charles will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents and wife, Charles was preceded in death by his sister, Lucy Merzian.
He is survived by his loving sons, Peter (Leslie) Merzian of Wildwood, MO and Harry Merzian of Phoenix, AZ; proud grandfather to Ella Mari Merzian and Charles Andrew Merzian; extended family and many dear friends.
In celebration of his life, a visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Friday, December 20, 2024, at Holy Virgin Mary & Shoghagat Armenian Church, 400 Huntwood Road, Swansea, IL. The funeral service will follow at 12 p.m. at the church with Rev. Father Voskan Hovhannisyan officiating.
Interment will be a private ceremony and limited to family members in Sunset Hill Memorial Estates, Glen Carbon, IL.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Holy Virgin Mary & Shoghagat Armenian Church. Donations will be accepted at the church.
