Alva "Al" William McDonald, 95, passed away Friday, February 14, 2025, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL.
He was born on November 9, 1929, in Wood River Township, the son of Frank and Hazel (Huckstep) McDonald. He married Bessie "Bess" Mae Nash on August 12, 1975 in Bethalto, IL, and she preceded him in death.
Al was very proud of his service in both the US Army and the US Air Force. He retired after 20 years of service to his country. He loved to travel and visited many places in his RV with Bess. He loved meeting new people and would help anyone anyway he could.
Al is survived by three children and their spouses, Rick McDonald of Imperial, MO, David and Karen McDonald of Glen Carbon, IL, and Robin and Kurt Dubler of Morrow, OH; two half-sisters, Jean Poulos and Ruth Harris; five grandchildren and their spouses, Ricky and Beth McDonald, David C. McDonald, Breanna McDonald, Brooke Dubler, and Miranda and Ben Land; three great-grandchildren, Mary Beth McDonald, Oliver McDonald, and Emberleigh Flentge; and many other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife, Bess, Al is preceded in death by his parents; a son, Al Jr., a brother, Otis, and a sister, Doris Lee.
Visitation will be held Saturday, February 22, 2025, from 9:00 am until the time of service at 11:00 am at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto with Pastor Terry McKinzie officiating.
Burial will take place in the Rose Lawn Memory Gardens with Military Burial Rites provided by the Alton VFW Post #1308.
