Jim and Emily Wigger were longtime educators in the Alton School District. Jim also served as a beloved coach in track and field who won an incredible three state championships in the 1960s. Jim and Emily left their indelible mark on both Alton students and the region through their service, dedication and passion for teaching and learning. They were also staunch advocates for the equity and inclusion of all students.

A $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student beginning this April. Jim and Emily’s three sons want the new scholarship to have a meaningful impact on a student while also recognizing the educational legacy of their parents. In a joint statement, they said, “We are honored to pay tribute to our parents by establishing a scholarship fund that will help provide students each year with an opportunity to attend college in pursuit of a career that will serve community values. Our parents were incredible role models for us, as well as for their students, and this scholarship allows us to continue their legacy of giving.”

Alton High Seniors can access the Wigger Memorial Scholarship Application through the Alton High Guidance Department at altonschools.org or the Alton Educational Foundation’s website: altoned.org and click on the “Scholarships Link.” The deadline to apply is March 30.
