JERSEYVILLE — St. Francis Holy Ghost Catholic School welcomed Dawna Egelhoff, an Alliance Educator for area hospitals, to speak with seventh- and eighth-grade science students about the intersection of science, healthcare, and future career opportunities.
The visit took place recently in Joan Dougherty’s science classes at the school in Jerseyville. Egelhoff’s lesson focused on real-life applications of scientific concepts within healthcare settings, highlighting how science and healthcare collaborate to improve lives, advance medical knowledge, and serve local communities.

During the session, students explored a range of career paths that combine scientific study with healthcare, including medicine, nursing, medical technology, research, and public health. The lesson aimed to help students connect classroom learning to practical uses and encourage them to consider how their interests and skills could lead to meaningful careers.
“St. Francis Holy Ghost Catholic School believes in educating the whole person and helping students see how faith, learning, and service are connected,” said Dougherty. “Presentations like this help our students see how science and healthcare can be used as a way to care for others and make a positive difference in the world.” She also highlighted the importance of curiosity, critical thinking, and compassion as values aligned with the school’s Catholic mission.
In February, students will take a field trip to OSF Saint Anthony’s Health Center in Alton, Illinois, to further explore science and healthcare. This visit is part of the school’s ongoing commitment to providing engaging, real-world learning experiences that support academic growth and vocational awareness.
