GRANITE CITY — U.S. Steel announced it will restart one of its blast furnaces at Granite City Works, leading to new job opportunities in the Metro East region, Gov. JB Pritzker said, and he is ecstatic about the decision.

The decision, driven by consumer demand, will bring new, good-paying jobs and significant investment to the facility, Pritzker stated in a news release. He credited collaboration among the state government, community members, elected leaders—including Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski—and the United Steelworkers union for the development.
“This investment in Illinois is a testament to collaboration among the State of Illinois, community members, elected leaders – with Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski leading the charge – and the strength and resilience of the men and women of the United Steelworkers (UW),” Pritzker said.
The governor emphasized that while the announcement provides important stability for Granite City, efforts to secure long-term investment and protect steelmaking jobs will continue. “In Granite City, we’ll keep fighting to ensure that the families who built this community have a future as bright as its past,” he added.
The restart of the blast furnace is expected to reinforce the steel industry’s role as a key economic driver in the Metro East area.
