NAPERVILLE - Sofia Rossetto scored on a shot from distance in the second minute, and it set the tone for the rest of the match as Father McGivney Catholic's girls soccer team took a 4-0 win over Elmhurst Timothy Christian in the IHSA Class 1A state semifinals Thursday evening at North Central College in Naperville, in far western suburban Chicago.

The win sent the Griffins to the state final on Saturday afternoon, where they'll play Pleasant Plains, who won over Johnsburg 5-1 in the second semifinal, for the school's first-ever state soccer title, and second in as many years.

Rossetto scored her golazo on a shot from distance in the second minute to give McGivney the lead at 1-0, then late in the first half, on a counterattack, when Emerson Isringhausen scored from distance to give the Griffins a 2-0 lead at the interval. It was a goal that gave McGivney momentum going into the second half.

The Griffins used that momentum to go ahead 3-0 in the 59th minute, when Natalie Beck scored off a breakaway, then Kinley Dettmers scored off a rebound in the 65th minute on a great piece of goal-poaching, to give McGivney a 4-0 lead.

The defense, which had been smothering the Trojans all throughout, yielded very little the rest of the way, as Peyton Ellis recorded the clean sheet in goal, not having to make a save as the Griffins went through to the final.

McGivney is now 23-2-3, while TC drops to 14-6-1, with the Griffins set to play the Cardinals in the final on Saturday at 2:30 p.m, while the Trojans meet the Skyhawks in the third-place game Friday at 9:30 a.m. Pleasant Plains is now 26-0-2, while Johnsburg is now 18-1-0.
