EDWARDSVILLE - The American Legion Edwardsville Post #199 recently donated school supplies to the Edwardsville Community Unit School District #7.

The Post donated $1,000 worth of school supplies to support students and teachers. Doug Thompson, Post Commander, explained that legion leaders learned of the district’s needs and decided to come together to give back.
“We just want to make sure that all of our citizens and our schools here in Edwardsville are supported by our veterans in the American Legion,” Thompson said. “It’s kind of been an ongoing process where they’re one of our partners in the school district. We’re very glad to help support them with their needs.”
Thompson shared that legion members spoke to teachers, who made them aware that many people donate school supplies in August but do not think to continue these donations into the second semester. By the time January hits, many classrooms are lacking essential supplies.
American Legion members and the Friends of the Legion decided to collect school supplies to support these needs. In a statement, the district expressed their appreciation for the legion’s “generous donation” and continued support of students and teachers.
“This marks the third consecutive year that Legion members and community supporters have come together to give back to the district,” District #7 said. “While the American Legion typically donates supplies in the fall, members recognized that the need for school supplies continues throughout the school year and stepped up to provide additional support mid-year.”
Thompson added that the American Legion operates on four key pillars, one of which is focused on youth. With this in mind, members are always eager to support local kids. As an organization, the American Legion Edwardsville Post #199 is focused on giving back and building up the Edwardsville community.
“When the community reaches out to us and lets us know how we can help, we’re more than happy to volunteer and help support whatever the need may be,” Thompson said. “I always tell folks to reach out if you need help from the community and, of course, the veterans. We are definitely community partners.”
