ALTON – Alton officials on Monday took the first step towards redeveloping a former golf course in a key commercial area of the city.
Committee of the Whole members voted unanimously on Monday to approve a resolution directing the Director of Planning and Development to issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the development of the Wadlow Town Center. Alderwoman Patricia Ford was absent.
“Wadlow Town Center” refers to the former site of the Robert P. Wadlow Golf Course, located between the Alton Amtrak/Multimodal Regional Transportation Center and the Holiday Inn Express & Suites. The site is partially bordered by Golf Road, just off Homer M. Adams Parkway.
According to the resolution, Wadlow Town Center has been “identified as a key site for redevelopment and strategic investment” in Alton and the city is seeking qualified developers or other entities to submit proposals to redevelop and/or make improvements to the site.
Alderman John Meehan asked if part of the land was required to remain “free and open space,” or greenspace. Greg Caffey, Director of Planning and Development, said a portion of the site will be reserved for "conservation" purposes.
Meehan also asked for an estimate of how many different parcels could be developed on the land. Caffey estimated the site could contain six lots of various sizes with a total area of about 30 acres.
