BETHALTO — A Bethalto School District employee died at a local hospital after suffering a medical emergency at the district’s Central Office on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2026, the school's superintendent confirmed on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2026. The cause of death has not been determined.
First responders were called to the Central Office around 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2026. The employee received emergency medical treatment and was transported to a local hospital, where the employee later died.

Bethalto School District Superintendent Jill Griffin said the emergency occurred at the Central Office, not at Civic Memorial High School, as some had reported. Students were not present where it occurred, she said.
The employee has not been identified, and the nature of the medical emergency was not provided. The coroner’s office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
“On September 29th, a Central Office employee suffered a medical emergency. Emergency responders were called to the scene,” Griffin said. “After receiving emergency medical treatment, the employee later passed away at the hospital. At this time, out of respect for the family, we will not be providing any additional information.”
